Brooke’s Bitchin’ Road Trip: The Mountain State – West Virginia Quilt Pattern

Our next stop on the Brooke’s Bitchin’ virtual road trip is West Virginia – The Mountain State! Known for its Appalachian peaks,

The Mountain State Quilt Pattern Cover

colorful fall landscapes, and rich history, this stop is full of inspiration for quilters and adventurers alike.

The Mountain State Quilt Pattern

Every quilt in my Home Pattern Series comes complete with:

  • A throw-size quilt design

  • Two mini quilt designs

  • Step-by-step instructions

  • Appliqué templates for the mini quilts

  • And my favorite detail… an appliqué heart you can place on the city you call home.

For the cover quilt of the West Virginia pattern, I couldn’t resist the magic of fall in the mountains. I chose batik fabrics in bold reds, oranges, yellows, greens, and browns to reflect the gorgeous foliage the state is known for. Batiks add depth and texture that mimic the layers of leaves changing with the season — they feel alive, just like the mountain views.

Fun Places to Visit in West Virginia 🌄

Whether you’re traveling with family or venturing out on your own, West Virginia has plenty to offer:

  • New River Gorge National Park – The newest national park in the U.S., and perfect for hiking, rafting, or just soaking in the views from the famous New River Gorge Bridge.

  • Blackwater Falls State Park – A must-see for waterfall lovers, especially in the fall when the trees around it are bursting with color.

  • Cass Scenic Railroad – Ride a historic steam train through the mountains and feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

  • Seneca Caverns – Explore underground caves for a one-of-a-kind adventure.

These destinations are full of color, texture, and movement — just like a good quilt!

Fabric Tips & Ideas 🧵

When you start your own Mountain State quilt, here are some fun ways to personalize it:

  • Stick with batiks in autumn hues if you want to capture the West Virginia fall feel.

  • Try solids or tonals for a cleaner, more modern vibe.

  • Go bold with scrappy fabrics — this pattern is stash-friendly, and it’s a great way to use up small cuts.

  • Want something unexpected? Try a grayscale palette or jewel tones for a striking twist.

This pattern really shines when you let your fabric choices tell your own story.

Fun Facts About West Virginia 📜
