A Great Lakes-Inspired Pixelated Quilt You’ll Love to Stitch

We’re back on the road for our next stop on Brooke’s Bitchin’ Road Trip, and this week we’re heading to the heart of the Midwest — welcome to Wisconsin, also known as The Badger State! 🧀💙

This quilt pattern is full of cozy, lakeside charm and is the second design in my Home Pattern Series, which features pixelated quilt patterns for every state in the U.S.

Whether you call Wisconsin home, have Midwest roots, or just love a classic design with meaningful touches — this one’s for you.

💙 Pattern Inspiration

For the cover version of The Badger State quilt, I drew inspiration from Wisconsin’s connection to the Great Lakes. The state borders not one, but two of these freshwater giants: Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

To capture that lakeside calm, I went with:

  • A light blue background to represent the water

  • A crisp white and very light gray state shape

  • A deep blue binding for contrast and that classic nautical feel

The result? A fresh, clean quilt that’s both simple and stunning — just like a sunrise over the lake.

🧵 What’s Included in the Pattern

The Badger State – Wisconsin is part of my Home Pattern Series, and like all patterns in the series, it includes:

  • 🧵 Three quilt designs – one throw-size layout (shown above) and two mini quilt options (shown below)

  • ❤️ A heart appliqué template you can place over your hometown or favorite Wisconsin spot

  • ✂️ Beginner-friendly instructions and a pixel layout to make piecing stress-free

  • 🖨️ Available in both digital download and professionally printed format

Whether you're sewing for yourself or gifting it to a proud Wisconsinite, this pattern is packed with heart and ready to stitch.

🎨 Fabric Tips + Ideas

I always encourage quilters to personalize their palette — here are a few fun ways to make The Badger State your own:

  • Team spirit – Use red and white for a University of Wisconsin Badgers theme

  • Rustic cabin vibes – Think barn reds, forest greens, and rich neutrals

  • Scrappy – Pull from your stash and give your quilt a fun, eclectic feel

  • Great Lakes hues – Keep it cool with blues, grays, and whites to echo the water and sky

Solids or tone-on-tones work great for that classic pixel look, especially to highlight the state’s shape clearly.

🧀 Fun Facts About Wisconsin

  • Nicknamed America’s Dairyland, Wisconsin is the #1 cheese-producing state in the U.S. (and yes, cheese curds are practically their own food group here)

  • The name “Badger State” comes from 1800s miners who lived in hillside burrows — not the actual animal

  • It’s home to over 15,000 lakes — in case two Great Lakes wasn’t enough!

  • Famous Wisconsinites include Frank Lloyd Wright, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and actor Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka!)
