The Granite State Quilt Pattern — Inspiration + Meaning

For this state’s quilt pattern, I leaned into the heart of New Hampshire — granite itself. The cover features layers of gray hues to honor the rugged stone that gave the state its nickname.

New Hampshire’s granite quarries have been active since the 19th century, supplying stone used in buildings and monuments across the nation. Much like granite, New Hampshire’s people are known for their strength, resilience, and timeless character.

This quilt is part of my Home Pattern Series, which includes:

• A throw-size quilt

• Two mini quilt designs

• Step-by-step instructions

• Appliqué templates for each mini

• And an appliqué heart to place on the city you call home

Fabric Tips for Your Granite State Quilt

Want to capture that stone-inspired New Hampshire vibe? Try these quilty ideas:

🔹 Use gray gradients to create depth and movement

🔹 Add textured solids or blenders that mimic real granite

🔹 Try low-volume whites and creams for balance

🔹 Incorporate deep pine greens, cranberry reds, or navy blues if you want a classic New England accent palette

🔹 Go bold with shimmer, metallics, or stone-speckled prints

This pattern is incredibly customizable and perfect for both seasoned quilters and beginners looking for a rewarding project.

Fun Facts About New Hampshire

• First state to form an independent government in 1776

• Home to the “Old Man of the Mountain” rock formation (RIP, but forever iconic)

• No general sales tax or state income tax

• Mount Washington is known for extreme weather — wind speeds once hit 231 mph!

• The state motto is “Live Free or Die,” representing its fierce independence

Thanks for joining me on this stop of our virtual road trip! I hope The Granite State inspires your next pixelated quilt project. Next week, we’re rolling on to our next destination… and I can't wait to share which one!

Until then — stay creative, stay adventurous, and stay stitchin’.
