Our virtual road trip is heading to the birthplace of presidents, rolling mountains, and coastal charm—Virginia! This week, I'm thrilled to feature The Old Dominion State Quilt Pattern as part of my Home Pattern Series—a pixelated quilt pattern that captures the heart of this beautiful state.

📍 Why Virginia?
Virginia is a state that’s rich in history and natural beauty. From the Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah National Park to the cobblestone streets of Colonial Williamsburg, there’s something here for everyone. Whether you’re a lover of historic landmarks, outdoor adventures, or small-town charm, Virginia invites you to slow down and explore.
🧵 Quilt Pattern Inspiration
For the quilt featured on the pattern cover, I drew inspiration from two state symbols:
🔴 The Cardinal, Virginia’s state bird, known for its vibrant maroon-red feathers
🤍 Nelsonite, the official state rock, which has a beautiful creamy white appearance.
These two colors together created a striking and earthy contrast that felt both historical and modern. Whether you’re a native Virginian, an alum of one of its many universities, or simply love the vibe of this iconic state, this quilt is a perfect way to celebrate your connection.
🧵 Quilt Fabric Tips & Color Ideas
There are so many ways to make this quilt your own. Here are a few ideas to spark your creativity:
Classic Cardinal: Use deep reds, burgundy, and creams to stick with the state bird theme. Add a pop of gold or black for contrast.
Virginia Tech Vibes: Hokie fans, this one’s for you—try maroon, burnt orange, and soft gray or cream!
Historic Williamsburg: Choose colonial blue, soft ivory, and rustic red tones to reflect the colors of Virginia’s oldest cities.
Shenandoah Inspired: Try muted greens, misty blues, and earthy browns to reflect the gorgeous mountain landscapes.
Coastal Virginia: Bring in soft aqua, sandy beige, and sunset coral tones to mirror the vibe of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic beaches.
Remember—each quilt pattern includes 3 designs: a throw-size and two mini quilts. The minis are perfect for wall hangings, travel keepsakes, or gifting to your favorite Virginia-loving friend. Plus, you get an appliqué heart template to place on the city that you call home.
